SUBtv and Ubisoft, the French software developer, joined forces to produce the very first Inter-University Gaming Tournament. This created a highly interactive brand experience and a blueprint for on-campus multi-player gaming events in the future…
Involving 14 universities across the country gaming against each other in real time on the Internet, the Tournament was conceived and developed by SUBtv specifically for the launch of Ubisoft’s AAA release Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2. The game was made exclusively available to SUBtv three days ahead of its national release date and the previous version of the game was the second most played game ever on XBOX Live, the online multi-player gaming platform.
Four professional gaming pods comprising two PS2 and two broadband XBOX units were installed in each of the 14 competing universities which enabled live gaming.
The competition began with game play to find two local champions who then competed as a pair for the title of Inter-University Champions, a £1,500 prize fund and a BT Broadband line free for a year.
Competing students were filmed live during game play allowing each university to see their opponents live as the tournament progressed. Viewing was also available online at any time during the tournament via a dedicated event website set up by Ubisoft.
The game release and tournament were publicised nationally via SUBtv screen advertising, SMS, and locally appointed event managers who managed all game play and promotions at their university.
